Dr. Kimberley Garth-James’ research project will culminate in a book about Widows and revolutionary skills that focus on ways faith can serve as a source of empowerment to confront societal norms and biases. This is a multi-year project and powerful exploration of women’s empowerment, particularly focusing on widows, through the lens of faith, and social justice. It delves into struggles for women’s rights, hindered by societal beliefs favoring men, and systemic inequalities perpetuated by legal, economic, and social structures that result in the exclusion of widows. Drawing from the insights of renowned social and religious feminist scholars like Nahilia Kabeer, Elizabeth Ozorak, Zilka Spahić Šiljak, and Lisa Weaver Swantz, as well as the UN Women Widowhood and Almanah Hope Foundation, it presents examples of widow struggles to overcome societal discrimination and poverty. This project underscores the relevance of #widowsprotectionact and rights in various historical, theological, and contemporary contexts, as widows endure to overcome societal discrimination and the environment that denies financial support for healthcare, education and career opportunities. Remember, a widow has to face having a dead husband (her primary support) and administration of policies that exclude the widow. Publications of the results of the widow project is forthcoming!
